The WSET Tasting – Level 1 will give you a simple introduction to wine tasting. During your classroom sessions you will taste approximately 6 wines. These will have been selected by your course provider in order to give you an introduction to a range of wines, and to allow you to compare and contrast their characteristics. For many this will be their first real introduction to a guided tasting and can be an eye opening experience.
You’ll likely taste:
- 2 white wines (one crisp and high in acidity and the other more rounded with oak influence and lower acidity)
- 3 red wines (one light such as Pinot Noir, one middling wine such as Merlot and a heavier wine such as Cabernet Sauvignon)
- 1 other wine – likely a dessert wine or perhaps even a rose
Fear not, however. These wines are for your enjoyment and understanding – there is no tasting component of the WSET Level 1 in Wine exam!
WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine®
The WSET Tasting – Level 1 lexicon is more basic that that of levels 2, 3 and 4 (diploma). You’ll cover:
- The color of the wine
- Aromas identified on the nose
- Flavors identified on the palate
- The levels of sweetness, alcohol and acidity as well as other structural components
You can find the lexicon contained within the level 1 specification on the WSET website.
Guided by your lecturer, this is a great chance to get to know a wide range of wines. You’ll be able to compare and contrast the wines, and even find out your preferred style!
WSET Level 1 Tasting – Conclusion
The level 1 tasting will give you a simple introduction to the analytical tasting of wine. It is a great place to get started, and will be an eye opening people for many people – particularly those who are not used to comparing and contracting wine.
It will also help you prepare for the level 2 tasting. Which is much more in depth, and with a wider range of wines!
